It results from infection with one of the types of adenoviruses, as many serotypes of this virus have been isolated from infected birds, as well as from healthy birds. Viral hepatitis is several syndromic diseases, and each of the serotypes of adenoviruses has characteristics and symptoms unique to each one. They are called containment body hepatitis (IBH) and hydrops pericardium syndrome (HP), and in some references they are combined under one name under the name (hepatitis and hydrops pericardium syndrome (HHS).
